This is the M1 Carbine Sear, USGI Type III, marked RIA for Rock Island Arsenal.
The Type III is the M2-pattern sear, identified by the elevated platform on the front half. That platform is the whole identification: the Type I has no hole through the rear half, the Type II adds the hole, and the Type III adds the platform. The Carbine Collectors Club notes this pattern was also used on semi-automatic-only carbines as an alternative to the earlier sears, so it is correct and in-service for an M1. Rock Island Arsenal manufactured sears, recoil plates, front sights and other small parts postwar to supply the Ordnance overhaul program run under TM 9-1276, which is why RIA-marked parts turn up throughout arsenal-rebuilt carbines.
Useful when comparing: Springfield Armory sears of this pattern carry no SA marking and are identified instead by a slight raised ridge toward the front. If yours is unmarked, that ridge is what to look for.
Included: Sear only, the exact part pictured.
Fits:
- US Carbine, Cal. .30, M1
- US Carbine, Cal. .30, M1A1
- US Carbine, Cal. .30, M2
Does not fit: Later-production Universal Firearms carbines, which moved to a redesigned trigger group that does not interchange with GI parts. Early Universals built on surplus GI components generally will accept this — match on the parts in your trigger housing rather than on the name on the receiver.
Fitting: Sold as a single replacement part for repair of a semi-automatic carbine. This is a fire control part and should be fit by a qualified gunsmith. Compare the nose, both holes and the overall profile against the sear coming out of your trigger housing before installing, since carbine trigger groups are frequently mixed. Once assembled, function check on an empty gun before loading: confirm the hammer holds when the bolt is released and when the receiver is bumped, that the trigger resets cleanly, and that the safety functions in both positions. Watch for hammer follow and failure to reset. Do not load the carbine until it passes.
Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.
Condition: Used, with the original parkerizing intact and even across the part — a matte gray-black with the as-forged surface texture still showing through. No rust, no pitting, no chips. Bright wear runs along the top edge and the lower contact edges where the part rode in the housing, which is normal service wear and not damage. The RIA marking is crisply struck and fully legible. The sear nose is square with no rounding or peening, both holes are round with clean bore walls, and the part is straight and true.
